Conceptualizing child psychotherapy to better respond to challenges encountered in child psychiatry and youth protection services

Children who go to see child psychiatrists, as well as those who are under the responsibility of the Youth Protection Services, tend to act out their difficulties instead of talking about their problems and using reflective functioning and symbolization. It is therefore necessary for the clinician to adapt the psychoanalytic intervention techniques currently used in classical child psychotherapy to be able to help them develop the mental processes required to work on their internal conflicts and relational problems. The authors propose a conceptualization of child psychotherapy based on three different intervention techniques. The first focuses on internal and relational conflicts. The second aims to restore the child’s ability to play. The third intends to help the child develop the mental processes that are necessary to recover past the point of traumatic play. Three clinical cases are used to illustrate these therapeutic techniques.
