The fly and the cookie: Alignment and unhingement in twenty-first-century capitalism

This text is an edited version of an excerpt of my SASE Presidential address, given at UC Berkeley in 2016. It discusses the role of morality in digital capitalism. I argue that this capitalism is made profitable through the twin processes of alignment (morally aligning individuals with the system’s rational goals) and unhingement (following individuals when they perform unhinged deviations from these goals). Finally, these dynamics reconstruct our moral intuitions, by subjecting self-worth to external and quantifiable monitoring.
