Despite a fruitful shared history, Franco-Italian relations from 1945 to the 1990s were complex and rarely up to the task. Paris was mainly concerned with German matters and treated its Roman cousin with a degree of disdain. Only de Gaulle and Mitterrand saw interest in Italy.
