The author emphasises the need to conceive infantile sexuality in its relation to adult sexuality and to include in its analysis the forms of response that have emerged from it. He explores the idea of an infantile sexuality that develops in the encounter with the object and not only in the absence of the object. This can be either in the libidinally charged encounter with the object or in the experience of the capacity to be alone in the presence of the object.
