The author draws on the combination of wish and trauma in Freud’s last conception of dreams, as a means of mastering trauma and an attempted wish-fulfilment. Comparing Freud’s theory of dreams to Bion’s notion of “dream thought”, which implies the exploration and interpretation of dreams as well as the capacity for “dreaming dreams”, she is lead to replace the notion of dreams as “the guardian of sleep” by that of dreams as the guardian of the patient-analyst relationship
