This article was born out of a shared reflection on the clinical framework and listening skills used with a bereaved patient (Emma) when the therapist is also affected in his or her personal life by an event of similar dramatic content. In other words, we are looking at the point of contact between the patient’s experience and that of the clinician. With the help of a single case, Emma, we also discussed the ways in which mourning is treated and analyzed how the object of passionate love could metonymically recall the lost object, suspend mourning and contain the pain. Only the analysis of the transferential and counter-transferential movements favors a recovery of the space of thought and avoids falling into the traps of identification, mutual seduction or reparation in the therapeutic framework.
