Horses and Musketeers in Paris, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2016. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The theme of the military horse can be explored by studying the only cavalry troops barracking in Paris during the Ancien Régime, the two companies of Mousquetaires de la Maison militaire du roi (the King’s Musketeers). In this paper, this corps allows us to introduce both the use of horses and the various urban facilities designed and built for horses. We can consider three aspects to understand the role of the military horse in Paris during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: stables and other facilities for housing horses, daily supervision of horses in the Paris barracks, and special employment of the Musketeers on horseback as the king’s delegates. Indeed, the installation and accommodation of the Musketeers’ horses can be considered an important step for the development of the cavalry troops quartering in barracks.
