This paper proposes an updated analysis of political party systems and how they have changed. Based on the observation of the current relative lack of interest in the concept of a party system, a reformulation of this issue is proposed, which distinguishes four dimensions for analysis. From this perspective, changes to party systems can be better understood in terms of both their historic development and as events related to the structure of the party system itself and its relationship with its environment.
