Fin’amor and fol’amor in the Chevalier au lion
Type de matériel :
84
The Chevalier au lion enables Chrétien de Troyes to offer a deeper analysis of the human heart and of fin’amor – a topic addressed in each of his works. The example of Yvain and his lady invites his audience to consider the link between the perfect fin’amor and fol’amor – in every sense that the adjective “ fole” could take on in the Middle Ages: the metaphorical madness of love; the crisis of insanity; and the foles amors in which sensual desire predominates. The sentimental ideas implied by these two adjectives are less opposed than one might think. Fol’amor emerges in new areas and, paradoxically, ultimately appears necessary for the discovery of romantic perfection.
