Primary Narcissism, Secondary Narcissism. Identity in the Management of Murderous Guilt

Thinking about identity requires us first to examine the complexes of origins, primal fantasies, and the sexual drives. For some subjects, the primal scene is inaccessible and castration leads to a fixation. In this situation, the fantasy of seduction can only be traumatic and leads to the fantasy of “A Child is Being Beaten”. In 1915, Freud suggested that the ego is cathected by the drives from the beginning and is capable, in part, of satisfying its impulses by itself. He calls this state of narcissism, and that of satisfaction, autoeroticism. When the system of self-satisfaction fails, the narcissistic wound makes identity difficult. Starting from the analysis of a working session in a “support group” ( groupe de parole) in a prison setting, I will examine these narcissistic issues which undermine the development of sexuality and identity. Behind the crime, do we find the criminal afflicted by guilt, as described by Freud ?
