The unfamiliar double: a configuration of the link and of the identity

Based on my clinical practice in groups for migrant patients, I try to understand the specific way in which the question of what is unfamiliar can emerge and be dealt with within two settings: a sensorial mediation group and a psychodrama group. My hypothesis is that the unfamiliar is an essential component of identity and that these groups which utilise channels that are complementary to speech are places of treatment that are indicated for this clinical work.Starting from an analysis of the material gathered using an observational method and note-taking, this hypothesis seems to be confirmed, but in a particular way. The analysis shows that what is unfamiliar has psychic effects on the group (anxieties, defence mechanisms, etc.). We discover here that a form of treatment consists in using the representation of the double. It is through the intermediary of this figure that the unfamiliar can be integrated and become familiar. We thus come to the conclusion that a co-figuration of an unfamiliar double serves as the dialectical incarnation of identity.
