On this basis, it develops a theological, scriptural, and ethical argument that a so-called mercy that bypasses justice is not a true virtue, but a cheap, counterfeit mercy. Only an ethic of just mercy is able to motivate and guide the Church’s response to ecclesial sex abuse and the needed institutional reform.
