The Walled-In Lover

The short story “La Grande Bretèche” is the slow disclosure of a walled up place where the horror of the crime committed there still lingers. It is a metaphor of what fuels Balzac’s writing. The writing aims at a space with sexual undertones, thus revealing, beyond the phallic logic, the place of the Thing towards which sublimation drives the object. The author unwittingly reveals how literature, through fantasy, allows a jouissance of the Thing while maintaining a barrier.
