The fear of COVID-19, combined with the desire of the French to help caregivers—whom they consider both heroic and overwhelmed—has led our fellow citizens to accept, for a long time and without complaint, unprecedented restrictions on their individual freedom. But the ravages of time, and the impact of these restrictions on their daily lives, their incomes, and their morale, combined with their distrust of the government, have meant that the French are now, in spring 2021, “at the end of their tether.” Their acceptance of vaccination, after months of skepticism, bodes well for the future. However, we must hope that the epidemic will end soon, because the morale of the population, coupled with its widespread distrust of the government’s health policy, would make coping with a potential resurgence (a tougher variant) of the epidemic beyond next fall impossible.
