In this text, we expose some aspects of Catholic spirituality’s concrete power during the period of Spanish colonization in the sixteenth century. The confluence between the Christian mystic repertoire of that time, with all its symbolic and material domination strategies, and the complex religious repertoire of the Africans and Indians from the colonies, besides other references, such as from Andeans, Arabs, Jews, etc., is the symbolic core of what we understand today as the resurgence of the magical inside social and communication systems, and also its poignant “materiality” in social and cultural processes of change. This is a first analysis based on historical connections and observations from fieldwork in the north of Brazil.
