Inspired by real events, the film, El Verdugo, by the Spanish filmmaker, Luis García Berlanga (1963), indulges in the satire of an executioner who embodies repression during the Franco era, in a Spain where tourism was a prosperous and flourishing activity. For this reason, the filmmaker confronts two opposing worlds: The idyllic universe of tourists, and the savage Spanish dictatorship embodied by José Luis, a recently promoted executioner. He depicts the latter as the victim of a system and not as the monster he generally symbolizes in the collective imaginary. His dream of travel progressively turns into a descent into Hell. . .
