In a conversation that was resumed after twenty years, the founders of Terrains & travaux, Gilles Bastin, Laure Bonnaud, Olivier Le Noé and Pierre-Paul Zalio, soon joined by Ashveen Peerbaye, recall the origins of what was initially the journal of a social science department of a École Normale Supérieure. From this small collective, its concerns, the pedagogical and institutional contexts, and the intellectual environment experienced by young sociologists, a journal welcoming empirical research in the social sciences gradually emerges from one issue to the next.
