French Nationals and Immigrants and the Ordeal of the Crisis (1973-1995)

The oil shock of 1973-74, a turning point in French economic and social history, marked the beginning of a new period in the management of foreigners in France since the end of the Second World War: toughening of immigration policy, closing of frontiers, policy of deportation. This withdrawal reaction, classic if one is to believe the historical work on past periods, was accompanied with a feeling of crisis that surprised French public opinion. Far from being only a stop gap-work force, the foreign workers are rooted in French society: This observation led to reactions that, once past the direct effects of the oil shock on the economic and social life up until 1983-1984, called into question French identity.
