RésuméAvec ses quelque 3000 salariés, SPIE constitue aujourd’hui l’un des plus grands groupes européens de services et d’ingénierie associés à la construction. Dirigé par ses salariés avec le soutien de PAI Partners, il est le produit des heurs et malheurs d’un major du BTP français : SPIE Batignolles. Longtemps fer de lance du groupe Empain-Schneider, SPIE Batignolles est victime d’une grave crise financière au tournant des années 1990, se rend indépendant grâce à un Rachat d’entreprises par ses salariés (RES), passe un temps dans le giron du groupe britannique Amec, mais ne tarde pas à s’en libérer, suite aux difficultés de ce dernier, tout en abandonnant à une nouvelle société SPIE Batignolles, devenue elle aussi indépendante, son activité BTP. SPIE réalise ainsi en France une synthèse entre la grande corporation spécialisée dans l’ingénierie (type Bechtel ou Fluor) et la compagnie de facility management à la britannique.

With some 3000 wage earners, SPIE company is today one of the largest European service and engineering groups related to construction. Managed by its own employees with the support of the financial firm PAI Partners, it is the off-shoot of the misfortunes of a major firm in French public works and building trades: SPIE Batignolles. For a long time, SPIE Batignolles was the spearhead of the Empain-Schneider group. However, it experienced a deep financial crisis at the beginning of the 1990s. Thanks to a LMBO, it became independent, then formed part of the British group Amec for a while, and then finally spun itself off from that when Amec encountered difficulties, relinquishing its activity in public works and the building trades to a new firm named SPIE Batignolles, which was also spun off. In France SPIE has achieved a synthesis between a large corporation specializing in engineering (such as Bechtel or Fluor) and a facility management company (as in Britain).
