RésuméL’Union économique et monétaire (UEM) de l’Union européenne repose fondamentalement sur une monnaie unique, l’euro, première monnaie sans État. Si son introduction est récente, elle s’inscrit néanmoins dans toute l’histoire de l’intégration européenne. Avec l’irruption de la crise financière globale, l’UEM a été gravement touchée et les insuffisances du système ont été mises en évidence. Après une présentation historique de l’importance de l’union monétaire dans la construction européenne, cet article s’attache à présenter les réponses qui ont été apportées afin d’assurer la stabilité de la monnaie unique et de remédier aux insuffisances apparues, tant de manière conjoncturelle que structurelle. Cette analyse, essentiellement politique, s’arrête à la fin 2010.

The Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) of the European Union lies on a single currency, the euro, first currency without state. Although its introduction is recent, this idea is present all along the history of the European integration. The turmoil of the global financial crisis has touched severely the EMU, and has showed the failures and inadequacies of the system. After a brief historical presentation of the importance of the monetary union in the European integration, this article presents the different conjectural and structural answers proposed at the European level to reinforce the stability of the single currency and to solve the problems of the inadequacies revealed. This analysis, mostly political, is limited to the end of 2010.
