À partir d’une enquête par observation ethnographique et questionnaire réalisée au sein d’un zoo français, l’article discute la notion de biophilie et l’idée selon laquelle les enfants aimeraient naturellement les animaux. Empruntant une perspective proprement sociologique, il entend montrer que, contrairement au postulat d’une biophilie innée chez les enfants, l’intérêt de ceux-ci pour les animaux du zoo est à la fois différencié et socialement produit, encouragé et renforcé, par divers processus institutionnels et interactionnels.

On the basis of ethnographic observation and a questionnaire survey conducted at a French zoo, the author discusses the notion of biophilia and the idea that children naturally love animals. Using a strictly sociological perspective, the article aims to demonstrate that, contrary to the hypothesis of innate biophilia, children’s interest in zoo animals is both socially differentiated and produced, encouraged and reinforced by various institutional and interactional processes.
