On the basis of a clinical situation, the author considers the role of a certain relationship with words—“talking big”—as an operation aiming to signify the impending entry into the genital stage. The author insists on the phenomenon of entrebescar (the Occitan term for troubadour-style word-weaving), a dynamic already expressed by the medieval tensons (poetic jousting), which, more or less adroitly in adolescence, relates to the significance of the issues implied in encounter. The author recognizes a series of occurrences that “talking big” emphasizes in the context of psychological work during puberty. In that context, “talking big” proceeds from a commentary related to pulsions, from a refusal of the feminine, and from a defense mechanism against the resurgence of an infantile archaic stage that the adolescent has to subjectify.
