Bénéfique pour les uns, nocif pour les autres, au point même d’être qualifié de néocolonialisme, le tourisme est l’objet de représentations opposées. Si les discours scandalisés contre le néocolonialisme servent à éviter d’aborder les problèmes que pose le comportement politique des responsables nationaux, il y a, parmi les conséquences géopolitiques de l’accroissement du tourisme, les attentats terroristes et l’implantation des mafias dans certaines régions touristiques. En outre, le rôle du tourisme comme moyen de faire aimer la nation, avec la mise en scène des lieux historiques et celle de certains paysages, est efficace. Enfin, dans certaines régions, le tourisme contribue à alimenter la représentation d’une identité régionale intangible qui devient un véritable produit touristique.

Tourism: a geopolitical theatre? Tourism, beneficial for some, harmful for others, to the point of being described as neo-colonialism, tourism is the object of opposite representations. If the scandalized speeches against neo-colonialism are used to avoid tackling problems arising from the national political representatives’behaviour, there are still, among the geopolitical consequences of a rising tourism, terrorist’s attacks and the implantation of the Mafia in certain touristic regions. Nevertheless, the role of tourism as a mean to promote a nation, with the staging of historical sites and landscapes, is quite efficient. Finally, in certain regions, tourism contributes to feed the representation of an intangible regional identity which becomes a real touristic product.
