RésuméNaître aux Antilles, c’est naître envahi d’emblée d’une surabondance de dieux qui n’ont pas hésité à prendre tous les bateaux de l’exil – ceux de la traite africaine comme ceux amenant notamment les travailleurs asiates venus remplacer la main-d’ œuvre vacante dès l’Abolition – avant de s’agripper comme ils l’ont pu aux rites, aux symboles, au calendrier, à l’iconographie d’une religion coloniale imposée et déjà gonflée de superstitions et de pratiques provenant des arrières terres françaises. C’est ainsi qu’à travers son histoire tourmentée mais pourtant si féconde, les Antilles françaises présentent l’illustration spectaculaire d’un métissage culturel impensé issu de l’entrecroisement de nombreuses traditions religieuses. L’étude s’attachera à expliciter comment se vivent ces diverses appartenances et comment se combinent ces multiples composants dont on découvrira qu’ils se juxtaposent et se créolisent harmonieusement en échappant étonnamment aux mélanges syncrétistes.

The magic-religious Creole as an expression of therapeutic and cultural interbreeding in the French West IndiesTo be born in the West Indies means to be born surrounded by a profusion of gods who joined the different vessels of exile – those of the African slave trade and those which brought the Asiatic workers to replace the manpower lost through the abolition of slavery. As far as possible, they held on to the rites, symbols, calendar and iconography of a colonial religion that had been imposed on them, already inflated by superstitions and practices coming from the French hinterlands. In this way, throughout its tormented but fruitful history, the French West Indies gives us a spectacular example of a natural cultural interbreeding, born of the interaction of many religious traditions. This study will try to explain how these various affiliations are perceived and how the multiple elements are combined ; we will discover that they juxtapose and take on a creole flavour while surprisingly avoiding any syncretist blending.
