In this article, we will discuss conspiracy theories and the factors that lead some people to believe these narratives. We will first examine individual explanations, in terms of cognitive deficit and/or psychopathology. These will lead us to question the link between education level and conspiracy: is the belief in conspiracy the result of a deficit in critical thinking, which formal education could compensate? Thirdly, we will underline the limits of an individual approach to conspiracy by highlighting the role of collective dynamics, which cannot be reduced to cognitive deficits and/or psychopathological disorders.
