The low rate and duration of breastfeeding in France sets it apart from other European countries. In an attempt to identify the reasons for this, this paper reviews historical, sociological, and psychological research on breastfeeding. It proposes an integrative categorization comprised of four factors of influence. This paper responds to claims that challenge the degree of individual responsibility and women’s freedom of choice.
