Il y a comme une évidence à lier l’œuvre de Pierre Schoendoerffer à l’honneur. L’honneur est effectivement un thème qui traverse l’ensemble de son œuvre cinématographique et littéraire, de La 317e section (le roman est publié en 1963 et le film sort en 1965) à Là-Haut (son dernier film, sorti en 2004, adapté du roman du même nom publié en 1981). Le héros « schoendoerfferien » se trouve bien confronté de manière récurrente à la question de sa fidélité à des principes moraux, indispensable pour conserver l’estime qu’il a de lui-même. Au fil de son destin, de la guerre d’Indochine à la guerre d’Algérie, les contours de l’honneur et ses implications pratiques dans la vie des hommes se brouillent pourtant, au point que le cinéaste-écrivain ne parvient totalement à répondre aux questions soulevées sans avoir recours à des références d’ordre spirituel.

As the destinies of these heroes unfold, from the Indochina War to the Algerian War, the outlines of honour and its practical implications in the lives of men become blurred, to the extent that the film-maker and author does not manage to reply fully to the questions raised without using references of a spiritual nature.
