Despite their centrality and their social impacts, technological transformations are commonly studied in a fragmented way. As a consequence, the link between capitalist domination, economic growth, ecological destruction and technological development is clouded. This article deals with the historical roots of the paradigm of the neutrality of technics, responsible for this theoretical deficiency. It proposes a sociohistorical ontology of the technical object and of the industrial world able to constitute an alternative paradigm recognizing the non-neutrality as a social attribute for the understanding of the technics and technologies, and for their transformation.
