RésuméTypiquement française, l’expression « aménagement du territoire », n’a été utilisée qu’à partir des années 1950. Pendant 30 ans, ce terme a été synonyme de « planification nationale, économique et urbaine de l’espace ». Pendant cette période, malgré les points communs entre « territoire » et « géographie », la notion d’aménagement du territoire a été rejetée par la science géographique comme trop technique ou trop politique. À la suite de l’arrivée de la Gauche au pouvoir (1981), le Territoire va devenir les Territoires et leur aménagement va être confié aux Collectivités locales. Aménagement prend le sens de développement local. Comme le montre l’histoire du DESS « Aménagement, animation et développement local » à l’Université Paris 7, une géographie appliquée va naître et s’intégrer peu à peu à la géographie universitaire.

A story in my way: the country planning and the teaching of the geographyDistinctively French, the phrase « aménagement du territoire » (spatial planning) was only used since the fifties. For 30 years, these terms were synonymous of “national, economic and urban planning of space”. During that period, in spite of the mutual points between “territory” and “geography”, the notion of land settlement has been rejected by geographical science: it was percieved as too technical, too political. Following the election (1981) of a Left wing government, territory will become territories and will be entrusted to the local authorities. Land settlement takes the meaning of development. As shown by the record of the Diplôme d’Études Supérieures Spécialisées “Spatial planning, coordination / animation and local development”, this applied geography was gradually integrated into academic geography.
