Agrippa d’Aubigné est un homme qui refuse de vivre dans son époque. S’il écrit largement au XVIIe siècle, en un temps où les protestants influents se rallient derrière un roi catholique, son présent est résolument inactuel alors que son passé est toujours d’actualité. À travers sa poésie et ses pamphlets, c’est dans la fixation du petit fait vrai avec des décennies de retard comme dans les grandes envolées eschatologiques qu’il brouille les temps pour pérenniser sa propre gloire et redonner au parti protestant le lustre glorieux qu’il n’a plus. Agrippa d’Aubigné mêle les différentes écritures au service de sa vaste entreprise de convocation du passé faisant de l’inactuel et du privé des pièces d’un procès contre les temps présents, criant d’actualité.

Agrippa d’Aubigné is a man who refuses to live within his time. If he mainly writes in the 17th century, when on the whole influent Protestants rallied behind a Catholic king, his present is definitely not of current interest while his past still is. Through his poetry and pamphlets, it is equally through the identification, decades after the event, of the “ petit fait vrai” – the authentic minor fact, in Barthes’ phrase - and through the great lyrical eschatological works, that he blurs temporal boundaries in order to render his own glory ever-lasting and give back to the Protestants the lustrous glory they no longer have. Agrippa d’Aubigné mixes the different writing styles in order to serve his vast design, that of summoning the past to transform what is no longer relevant, and what is private, into elements indicting, with pressing relevance, the present times.
