Le terme « obscurantisme » se trouve aujourd’hui réactualisé en raison de dérives à la fois idéologiques et comportementales dans la sphère du fait religieux où il semble s’être fait une place à la fin du xixe siècle. S’il faut refuser la critique idéologique qui réduit toute religion à ce fait, c’est en fonction de deux critères de pertinence : l’obscurantisme religieux tient, d’une part, à un simplisme d’affirmation réduite à quelques mots ou à une simple invocation, et d’autre part, à une violence de comportements systématiques contre l’autre réduit au « mécréant », où se manifeste une logique de rejets arbitraires. Effet de la modernité provoquant des crises de la conscience religieuse, l’obscurantisme ne peut être accepté ni individuellement ni socialement.

The term obscurantism is today updated because of both ideological and behavioral drifts in the religious field where it took its place at the end of XIX° century. It is necessary to refuse the ideological criticism who reduces any religion to this fact, on the basis of two relevant criteria : the religious obscurantism is related to, on one hand, a simplism of assertion reduced to a few words or to a simple invocation, and, on the other hand, a systematic violent behavior against the other reduced to the « non-believer »,  in a logic of arbitrary rejection. Effect of modernity causing crises of the religious consciousness, the obscurantism can be accepted neither individually nor socially.
