Cet article s’efforce de montrer combien l’histoire du livre est devenue, en 50 ans, un chantier majeur de l’histoire générale. Indissolublement liée à l’histoire de l’édition et de la lecture, elle s’inscrit dans le courant inspiré par Lucien Febvre d’une histoire totale, à la fois économique, sociale, politique et culturelle. Isolant cependant l’édition comme une activité spécifique née à la fin du xviiie siècle, elle s’oppose à toute vision essentialiste du texte autosuffisant.

The author of this article endeavours to show how, within fifty years, the history of the book has become a major player in the field of history. Inseparable from the history of publishing and the history of reading, in the wake of Lucien Febvre, it aims at a total history — altogether economic, social, political and critical. However, since it defines publishing as a specific activity born at the end of the eighteenth century, it refuses an essentialist view of the text as self-sufficient.
