Le concept de pulsion est, dès son apparition, intimement lié à la sexualité (infantile), le refoulement et l’inconscient. Distinguer pulsion et instinct permet de différencier une sexualité pulsionnelle d’une sexualité instinctuelle. La remise en question d’une source biologique de la pulsion donne toute sa place à la « précession sociale » qui nous conduit à proposer la civilisation comme corrélat de la pulsion. Le refoulement au sein du psychisme individuel est mis en rapport avec un mécanisme équivalent dans la société et dans la théorie psychanalytique elle-même.

From it first emergence, the concept of drive remains intimately linked to (infantile) sexuality, repression and the unconscious. The distinction between drive and instinct makes it possible to differentiate drive sexuality from instinctual sexuality. The examination of a biological source of the drive brings into play the "social precession" which leads us to suggest that civilization is a correlate of the drive. Repression within the individual psyche is brought into relation with an equivalent mechanism in society and in the psychoanalytical theory itself.
