L’ouverture, à une époque récente, de certaines archives israéliennes, américaines et britanniques, et leur exploitation par de nombreux historiens, en particulier israéliens, permet aujourd’hui une meilleure compréhension de certains des principaux aspects du premier conflit israélo-arabe. L’analyse de H. Laurens, appuyée sur un riche appareil de références, confronte les interprétations fournies sur les attitudes des grandes puissances, la position des Etats arabes, celle des Palestiniens, leur exode, le sort des Palestiniens restés en Israël, et les tentatives de règlement de 1949.

The recent opening of some Israeli, American and British archives, and their use by numerous historians, in particular Israeli, provides us with a better understanding of some of the main aspects of the first Arab-Israeli conflict. This study by H. Laurens, drawing on a wealth of references, confronts the interpretations provided of the behavior of the great powers, the position of the Arab states, of the Palestinians, their exodus, the fate of Palestinians remaining in Israel, and the attempts at a settlement in 1949.
