Après avoir distingué différents sens du mot « constitution », l’article défend la possibilité et l’intérêt d’une interprétation « scientifique », qui vise à établir les significations des énoncés constitutionnels. Entendue de la sorte, l’interprétation procède de la même manière à l’égard de la constitution ou de tout autre texte. S’il existe une spécificité de l’interprétation constitutionnelle, elle n’apparaît que dans le cadre d’une notion beaucoup plus confuse, où l’« interprétation » désigne n’importe quelle argumentation qui invoque la constitution.

The article first distinguishes between the various meanings of the word “constitution” and argues in favour of the possibility and the interest of a “scientific” analysis, aiming to establish the meanings of the constitutional statements. In such an approach, the interpretation proceeds in a similar fashion with the constitution as with any other text. If there is a specific mode of constitutional interpretation, it appears only in the framework of a more confuse notion, whereby the term “interpretation” applies to any argument that refers to the constitution.
