RésuméSi les études d’héraldique scientifique ont pris leur essor depuis une génération déjà, les hérauts, eux, pourtant personnification de la culture aulico-chevaleresque, restent toujours fort mal connus. Des chercheurs, en France et Allemagne, aux Pays-Bas, au Royaume Uni (ils furent les premiers), en Espagne et au Nord et à l’Est de l’Europe ont commencé à déblayer le terrain, mais l’essentiel reste à faire: collecter les documents, établir une chronologie, une géographie et une prosopographie (bien avancée à l’Institut historique allemand de Paris en ce qui concerne les occurrences dans le matériel documentaire « bourguignon »), observer l’institutionnalisation de l’office, comparer et, enfin, expliquer la fonction. Pour y aboutir une coopération internationale efficace est indispensable.

The Officer of Arms: What we Know and What we Don’tIf the studies in scientific heraldry have experienced a notable surge over the past generation, the heralds themselves, though the very embodiment of the Aulico-chivalrous culture, still remain very ill-known today. Searchers, in France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom (they were the first), Spain, from the North and from the East, have started to clear the ground, but the major part of the work remains to be done: collecting documents, drawing a chronology, a geography and a prosopography (this latter in a fair state of advancement at Paris’s German Historical Institute with regard to occurrences in Burgundy’s documentary material), observing the institutionalization of the office, comparing and finally explaining the function. In order to achieve these goals an efficient international cooperation is indispensable.
