Comme beaucoup d’hommes du début du xviie siècle, Jacques Guignet reste un inconnu, faute d’archives. Le cas de cet avocat fiscal du bailliage d’Ornans (au comté de Bourgogne), vers 1617-1628, n’a rien d’exceptionnel : les trop rares informations que nous avons pu glaner sur son activité illustrent le labeur quotidien des avocats fiscaux, modestes officiers que l’on connaît très mal. Heureusement, les éléments que nous avons recueillis et présentés apportent une multitude de détails concernant la pratique des enquêtes menées sur le terrain et sur l’usage plus ou moins développé des monnaies étrangères dans les campagnes et les montagnes frontalières. Les archives subsistantes confirment les liens très étroits entre la Franche-Comté de Bourgogne et les Pays-Bas méridionaux.

The case of this tax lawyer with the Ornans, county of Burgundy, bailiwick around 1617-1628 is in no way an exception : the far too scanty information that could be gathered on his activity illustrates the everyday toiling of tax lawyers, those ill-documented low ranking officers. Fortunately, the elements that we could collect and produce provide a wealth of details on the actual development of field investigations and on the more or less frequent use of foreign currencies in the rural and mountainous regions in the vicinity of foreign borders. The archives that could be preserved confirm the very close links that existed between the Burgundian Franche-Comté and the southern Netherlands.
