Nineteenth-century African American historians believed in the power of history to change minds, fight racial prejudice, make African Americans proud of their past and address their current condition. This history with an agenda relied in part on collective biographies, i.e. biographical sketches of great men and (a few) women. This essay will examine the way this pantheon was constructed in the early African American press as well as the first books by African American historians.
