Lorsque l’histoire interprète aujourd’hui les comportements des acteurs, elle privilégie en général la rationalité limitée ou bien les émotions. Nous soulignons une autre dimension : les actions et réactions face à l’incertitude. Il s’agit ici de l’incertitude technique, rencontrée dans la conception et la fabrication de produits ou même dans leurs usages par les entreprises, les organisations publiques civiles et militaires ou les consommateurs. Il s’agit d’une expérience commune, qui ne se limite pas au temps présent, loin de là. Elle peut entraîner des catastrophes et déboucher sur des remises en cause organisationnelles, industrielles ou scientifiques. Les recherches récentes réalisées par des historiens aux États-Unis apportent des éclairages très neufs sur l’opacité délibérée de certains dispositifs techniques et ses dimensions politiques, sur la distinction entre incertitude technique cognitive, matérielle et prospective et sur les pratiques adoptées face à elle : de la sociabilité locale au partage des ressources intellectuelles à l’échelle nationale, à la coopération avec les universités et à l’élaboration d’outils probabilistes. Elles appellent les sciences sociales à considérer l’économie comme animée par des processus d’exploration que le droit vient enserrer et à reconsidérer, dans le temps et l’espace, le rapport des femmes et des hommes aux objets.

The potentials of a history of technological uncertaintyWhen historians today assess the behaviour of actors, they generally privilege their limited rationality or their emotions. Another dimension needs however to be emphasized : their actions and reactions in situations of uncertainty. The focus here is on technological uncertainty, as it appears in the design and production of goods or even in their uses by businesses, public organizations (whether civilian or military) or by consumers. It is a very common experience, which is not limited to contemporary history, far from it. It may lead to catastrophes and bring about far-ranging changes of organization, production or of scientific knowledge. Recent researches achieved by historians in the USA throw a new light on the deliberate opacity of certain technological devices and its political dimensions, on the distinction between cognitive, material and prospective technological uncertainty and on the practices developed by industry and by craftsmen : from local sociability to the sharing of intellectual resources available nationally, to cooperation with universities and to the creation of probabilistic devices. They call social sciences to rethink the economy as shaped by processes of exploration embedded in legal regimes and to reconsider the relationship of women and men to artefacts along time and space.
