The development of early childhood in foster care was analyzed by sexes. The sample consisted of 30 children up to 36 months, due to pre and post natal abuse were separated from their biological families and placed in foster care. Two Argentine tests were used at the time of admission and after two and four months of foster care: PRUNAPE and IODI. Differences were found by sexes with girls showing more favorable development in the areas of language and socioemotional (evaluation 1), fine motor (evaluation 2) and personal social skills (evaluation 3). The results suggest a more adaptive adjustment and greater capacity for recovery in the female sex. While foster care may allow resilience after adversity this may be moderated by the sex of the child. As limitations, the small sample size highlights, should therefore be considered as a pilot study and the evaluation of development from only observable patterns.

Se analizó el desarrollo según sexos de la primera infancia en acogimiento familiar. La muestra fue de 30 niños/as de hasta 36 meses de edad que, por maltrato pre y posnatal, fueron separados de sus familias de origen e ingresados en acogimiento familiar. Se emplearon dos pruebas argentinas al momento del ingreso y tras dos y cuatro meses de acogimiento: PRUNAPE e IODI. Se encontraron diferencias según sexo, presentando las niñas un desarrollo más favorable en el área lenguaje y socioemocional (evaluación 1), motricidad fina (evaluación 2) y personal social (evaluación 3). Los resultados sugieren un ajuste más adaptativo y mayor capacidad de recuperación en el sexo femenino. Si bien el acogimiento familiar permitiría resiliar tras adversidades, ello podría ser moderado por el sexo de quien acogen. Como limitaciones, se destaca el pequeño tamaño de la muestra, siendo un estudio piloto, y la evaluación del desarrollo desde pautas solo observables.
