RésuméIl est aujourd’hui requis de revisiter la question du statut et de la fonction de l’Église et de réfléchir au rapport noué entre le monde et elle, rapport horizontal et qui ne peut se penser hors de l’institutionnel. Le motif de la sacramentalité de l’Église, apporté par la constitution Lumen gentium a ouvert des perspectives qu’il faut interroger. Les débats entre les rédacteurs conciliaires montrent à quel point ce motif fut problématique et peut mettre en cause celui de l’unité par son aspect inclusif.Mais plus positivement, en tant qu’institution intermédiaire, l’Église est lieu de symbolisation de l’humain et de convocation à l’engendrement du sujet. Elle est le lieu où se dit et peut s’opérer un « salut ». « Signe et instrument », elle est occasion, mais, sans occasion, rien ne se passe, rien n’advient.

Status and place of the Church in its internal understanding and in relation to societyIt is necessary today to come back to the question of the status and the function of the Church in rethinking the relationship between itself and the world, a horizontal relationship that cannot be conceived of outside of an institutional framework. The theme of the sacramentality of the Church, brought out by the Lumen gentium constitution opened up perspectives that we must look into. The debates among the conciliary redactors indicate to what extent this theme was felt to be problematic and can undermine the theme of unity through its inclusive nature.In a more positive approach, as an institution of mediation, the Church is a locus of symbolisation of what is human and of an invitation addressed to the subject to become truly him or herself. It is the place where “salvation” is spoken of and can happen. “Sign and instrument”, the Church is an opportunity, but without any opportunity, nothing happens, nothing comes to be.
