Une journée d’études intitulée « Aux sources de la création du ministère de l’Environnement : des années 1950 à 1971 », s’est tenue le 16 novembre 2011, à l’occasion des quarante ans du ministère français de l’Environnement. Organisée par le Comité d’histoire ministériel, en partenariat avec l’Association pour l’histoire de la protection de la nature et de l’environnement (AHPNE), elle a réuni près de 150 participants pour évoquer la « période prénatale » de ce ministère, selon l’expression d’Henri Jaffeux. Nous remercions le ministère de l’Écologie, du Développement durable et de l’Énergie de nous avoir autorisés à reprendre quelques passages des actes de cette rencontre afin de comprendre les mouvements historiques qui ont précédé la création d’un tel ministère.

A study day devoted to the antecedents of France’s Ministry of the Environment over the years from 1950 to 1971 was held on 16th November 2011 to mark forty years of the French Ministry of the Environment. Organized by the ministerial history committee, in partnership with the AHPNE (the association for the history of the protection of nature and the environment), it attracted almost 150 participants, who had gathered to discuss, in the words of Henri Jaffeux, the ‘prenatal period’ of this ministry. We would like to thank the Ministry of the Environment, Sustainable Development and Energy for allowing us to reproduce some passages from the proceedings of this meeting in order to help to understand the historical movements that preceded the creation of this ministry.
