Avec le concept de sublimation Freud a tenté de rendre compte du passage du sexuel au non sexuel sans jamais varier sur l’infériorité de la femme en ce domaine, sur son incapacité « à égaler l’homme dans la sublimation de la sexualité » et partant à œuvrer au développement de la culture et du lien communautaire. Il n’a d’ailleurs semble-t-il pas témoigné d’un quelconque intérêt pour les créations littéraires, artistiques ou scientifiques de femmes du XIXe siècle déjà connues à sa naissance, telle George Sand dont l’œuvre littéraire abondante s’impose dans la littérature romantique française. Dans la Correspondance avec Marie d’Agoult, avec qui George Sand sera liée d’une amitié intense pendant une courte période de sa vie, s’appréhende comment, faute de pouvoir affronter le travail de la haine vis-à-vis de l’objet primaire, le lien affectif entre deux femmes ne peut trouver d’issue sublimatoire. En revanche, l’œuvre de George Sand, ses romans, ses écrits autobiographiques, ses multiples Correspondances – avec Gustave Flaubert tout particulièrement – témoigne avec force d’une possible métabolisation de cette haine au travers de la création littéraire. La question d’un rapport particulier de la femme à la sublimation, non aligné sur le modèle freudien de la sublimation, apanage du masculin, se pose à partir de la conception de l’implication de l’écrivain dans son œuvre, des conflits qu’elle doit assumer pour rendre opérante sa bisexualité psychique et d’une frontière qui paraît incertaine entre sublimation et idéalisation.

Sublimation and Female Sexuality. From a Reading of the Correspondence of Marie d’Agoult and George Sand With the notion of sublimation, Freud was trying to account for the passage of the sexual to the non-sexual, leaving unvaried the inferiority of women in this field, in their incapacity to ‘equal men in the sublimation of sexuality’and to work towards the development of culture and community bonding. Apparently, he showed little interest for the literary, artistic or scientific achievements of women in the nineteenth century who were already renown at the time of his birth, like George Sand whose multi-facetted literary works play a role of prime importance in French Romantic literature. In the letters she exchanged with Marie d’Agoult, with whom she was intimate for a short period of time, we can see how, even if the progression of hate in its elaboration towards the primary object is less clear, the affective link between two women can be sublimated. On the other hand, George Sand, in her novels and autobiographical writings and in the letters she exchanged with Flaubert among others, bears witness to the possible metabolisation of this hatred through literary creation. The idea of a specific female relation with sublimation, not aligned on the Freudian model which is a male prerogative, can be questioned if we consider the implication of the writer in her work, the conflicts that she had to assume to make her psychic bisexuality operative and the uncertain frontier between sublimation and idealisation she was faced with.
