RésuméÀ ce jour, le critère de l’ actualisation est généralement évoqué comme réponse à la question du statut de l’article. L’argument reste cependant problématique : alors que certaines écoles linguistiques l’évoquent pour plaider en faveur d’un article apport au nom, d’autres courants l’utilisent pour étayer la thèse d’un article support nominal. Cette contribution cherche à montrer que l’analogie fonctionnelle n’est qu’apparente, puisque trois interprétations différentes du terme (et du concept) « actualisation » sont recensées au minimum, allant de la possibilité pour le nom de passer de la langue au discours à l’identification du référent, en passant par la quantification et l’organisation interne du référent. Du fait de cette quantité d’actualisations qui, d’après nous, constituent trois étapes d’un même processus linguistique, le statut fonctionnel de l’article reste à ce jour sibyllin. Ou apport ou support du nom, le rôle du petit membre ne cesse d’interroger.

Nowadays, the criterion of “actualization” is very often evoked as an answer to the question of the status of the article. This argument, however, remains problematic: some linguistic theories suggest that the article is to be seen as a kind of input (“apport”) with regard to the noun, while other schools of thought use the same argument of actualization to defend the opposite position, viz. the one assuming that the article really supports the noun (“support”). This paper tries to show that the functional analogy is only apparent, since three different interpretations for the term (and the concept) actualization have been identified in literature: the possibility for the noun to cross the barrier from language to discourse, the identification of the referent and, finally, the quantification and internal organization of the referent. Because of the coexistence of three types of actualization, which we believe represents three stages of a singular linguistic process, the functional status of the article remains unclear and vague. Whether “apport” or “support” of the noun, the role of the article remains an intriguing issue.
