When the analysand idealises their analyst and the analysis to such an extent that he or she becomes transfixed in a fascinated contemplation of self, then they run the risk of becoming hostage to a theory which has become an ideology, a process which essentially aims at reducing identification conflicts to a maximum. ‘Working transference’ in particular favours the preservation of the passional transference which emerges through the idealisation of a idea or theory.
