RésuméCet article présente l’apparition du sport moderne en Ethiopie, à la fois dans les institutions scolaires et militaires, mais également dans la sphère associative, notamment avec le football. Le sentiment national éthiopien se constitue en même temps que se mettent en place les premières équipes locales de football et il se renforce à l’occasion de rencontres avec des équipes « étrangères » puis érythréennes. C’est dans ce contexte, et autour de la figure de Ydnekatchew Tessema que les premières institutions sportives du pays sont fondées. L’athlétisme, qui n’est pas encore vecteur du nationalisme sportif éthiopien, se développe surtout après 1947, avec l’aide des Suédois. Parmi les sports éthiopiens de cette période, il reste en second plan, cantonné aux institutions scolaires et surtout militaires. Conformément aux conceptions de l’époque sur les aptitudes des Noirs, il vise principalement à développer les courses de vitesse, et non pas d’endurance. The national Ethiopian feeling builds up at the same time as the first local soccer teams get organized and it reasserts itself during meetings first with ’foreign’ teams then with Erytreans. It is in this context, and around the figurehead of Ydnekatchew Tessema that the first sporting institutions of the country are founded. Track and Field, which is not yet a vehicle for the Ethiopian sportive nationalism, develops mostly after 1947, thanks to the help of the Swedes. Among the Ethiopian sports of the time, it remains in the background, limited to educational and -more notably - military institutions. In accordance with the conceptions of the time about black people’s gifts, it is meant to develop sprint but not middle or long distance running.
