« Je suis pour – aucune illustration », écrit Mallarmé, dans une formule qui écarte l’illustration en même temps qu’elle l’annexe au livre. L’article examine cette « fugue » entre images et texte dans le cas de l’édition Ambroise Vollard – demeurée édition fantôme – du poème Un coup de dés « illustré » par Redon : aux blancs de la typographie devaient faire écho les noirs des lithographies ; à la « mobilité de l’écrit » que catalyse le dépliement du volume devaient répondre les formes en formation que Redon puise aux sources de l’Inconscient ; en sorte que l’abstraction du poème se serait vue reconduite à sa source figurale enfouie : là où, dans le transfert d’art, se découvre, « muet », un enfant mystérieux, à jamais « tu ». Il en résulte une nouvelle « partition » entre les arts, réunis et séparés à la fois, sous l’égide de la Poésie, dans le jeu du Livre. « I am all for – no illustration », writes Mallarmé, formulating the idea – « Je suis pour – aucune illustration » in such a way as to both exclude illustration and subsume it within the book. This paper focuses on the « fugue » between images and text in the Ambroise Vollard edition – an edition which has stayed a phantom – of Mallarmé’s Un coup de dés (A cast of dice) as illustrated by Redon : the blacks of the lithographs were to have echoed the whites of the typography ; the forms being formed that Redon sought at the roots of the Unconscious were to have answered the « mobility of the written form » catalysed by the unfolding of the volume ; so that the poem’s abstraction was to have been referred back to a lost figurative source : at the place where, in the transfer of art, a mysterious child is uncovered, « mute », forever « shut up » and addressed as « thou » (tu in French is both the familiar form of address and the past participle of the verb taire, to shup up or keep silent). The result is a new « partition » of the arts, both reunited and separated under the aegis of Poetry and in the play of the Book.
