In this first paper, the author presents the use of shadow play in a day hospital for children, and shows how, through the act and gesture, in the presence of others to whom the autistic or psychotic child can relate, it can enable access to the psyche as we ordinarily view it. The workshop also questions the place each person has within his/her relationship with the institution.
