RésuméEntre 1940 et 1945, 45 000 malades mentaux sont morts de faim et de froid dans les hôpitaux psychiatriques français. De par son ampleur et de par ses conséquences dramatiques, cette crise marque de façon indélébile la mémoire d’une institution dont la réputation est déjà exécrable. Mais la famine conduit aussi un certain nombre de psychiatres à prendre conscience de la nécessité de réformer en profondeur l’assistance psychiatrique. Mon objet sera d’analyser les initiatives développées dans quelques hôpitaux ou services psychiatriques qui ont pour but de diminuer la durée de l’internement et de favoriser la réinsertion sociale des malades mentaux. Between 1940 and 1945, 45 000 insane people died of hunger and cold in French mental hospitals. This unprecedented and dramatical crisis left an indelible mark in the memory of an already discredited institution. But the starvation also has brought some psychiatrists to become aware of the necessity of a deep reform of the psychiatric care system. My purpose is to analyse the initiatives developed in some mental hospitals or psychiatric departments to reduce the length of committals and to promote the social reintegration of the mental ills.
