The traditional etymology of the group of words based on πενία is the idea of “working for one’s living.” But the usages of πένομαι, involving few links with the idea of work, do not support this etymology. The original sense is that of “being busy,” a sense confirmed by the failure of the poor man to take part in politics, because of the lack of free time for the affairs of the city.
